DEALING WITH DEBT - 1 (AN INTRODUCTION)
Etuhu (not his real name) was more than a friend, he was a brother. I desire always, to have around me people that are excelling in their chosen fields who also love Jesus passionately, once I observe that you have these two attributes, you become my brother or sister. Etuhu fitted perfectly; he was a brother that I cherished hanging around and discussing anything that crossed my mind with. All these were to change after he lost his job, and then came the most trying season of my relationship with Etuhu.
There was a need to settle an urgent financial issue and there was no money to meet that need; actually someone had promised to help him with the money (I confirmed that personally because I saw the text message), but there was a slight delay and the issue could not wait, and so as a brother, I stepped in and lent him the needed amount which was slightly above my salary for one month then. Time to pay up came and passed and I didn’t get the money. That began a journey that took 2 years of quarrels, anger, patience, prayers, persistence, forgiveness, letting go, etc for our relationship to come out better and stronger. In hindsight I have come to honour and respect the power in the gospel of Jesus Christ, as that was the only thing that prevented a messier story.
The story above and other issues that came up lately led me to look at this issue of debt again, and a little research made me realize that my own case was just a child’s play compared to several others who were not too privileged to have a good ending. So I will beg of you to follow this series to the end. I am fully convinced that we as individuals can rise above debt and all of its trappings and live a debt free life. Many have attained that level (it never came cheaply though and never will) and many are seriously on the path to getting free. Somehow, many through their actions and inactions today are already getting into this trap. The only request I make today is that you make it a point of duty to teach, counsel and help people to become free from any entanglement of debt, (even if you are already in debt, the solutions that I will be sharing are simple, but not easy, they are practicable are guaranteed to bring you out of any type and magnitude of debt that you have found yourself in). Believe me, the level of ignorance we have in this subject area is quite alarming and many are wallowing helplessly in it without any hope of getting out. Some have come to accept it as a part of life, while some are at the threshold of entering. You can save a life, a generation or even a nation at large if you make it a point of duty to educate those within your circle of influence on the dangers of debt and the solutions.
Please come with me as we look at:
1.) The different reasons why people get into debt.
2.) The concept of good and bad debt using the biblical standard.
3.) Sundry issues on debt.
4.) The steps and strategies to conquering debt and living a debt free life.
Stay tuned…
